The MNCN Collection of Paleobotany comes from donations, collectings, purchases or interchanges carried out since the middle of the XVIIIth century. This collection is international in scope, ranging from the Proterozoic to the Pleistocene, and including specimens from 29 countries; nevertheless it is strongest for Spanish localities mainly collected in the XXth century by J. Royo-Gómez, J. Gómez de Llarena, V. Sos, and I. Olagüe (who are not researchers in Paleobotany), and E. Caballero-Bellido, J. Menéndez-Amor, R. H. Wagner, C. Diéguez and E. Barrón (who are Paleobotanists). Particular strengths of the collection are: Carboniferous floras from Cantabrian Basin, Cretaceous woods and leaf floras from Castilla-León and Madrid regions, Neogene leaf and pollen floras from Catalonia, and recent and fossil diatom algae collection. Systematically the greatest strength of the collection is in Carboniferous Pterydophyta and Pteridospermophyta and Cretaceous-Tertiary angiosperms. There is also a well-represented collection of Diatoms donated in 1926. Most of the collection are dry-preserved specimens and microscopic slides.

Since 1987, paleobotany research has been focused in: taxonomy, anatomy and paleoecology of Upper Jurassic from Burgos; Lower Cretaceous from Cuenca; Upper Cretaceous from Madrid; and Neogene macro- and microflora from La Cerdaña (Lérida); Retrieval of scientific collections with heritage value, and cataloguing and documenting of scientific paleontological collections. In the middle of XXth century research were focused in: Carbonifeour from Northern Spain and palinology studies.

Types, figured and some other specimens must be studied in situ.
When specimens are sent to borrowers: forwarding of loans to third parties is not allowed without prior written approval of the lending institution; no changes to original labels are allowed; no changes to specimens or any other material are allowed without permission (including pedestals/armatures, sheets, etc. to which the specimen is fixed); annotations by the borrower should not be permanently attached but provided otherwise, preferably electronically or by determination slips, labels or other hard copy means; if an object is damaged, the owner must be informed immediately, no repairs are allowed without consultation with the owning institution.

Only approved scientifics/borrowers can access to specimens for research purposes. Approved scientifics/borrowers must be bona fide researchers; in case of postgraduate students, postdoctoral researchers, emeritus and retired staff, honorary or adjunct staff etc request must be made through their supervisor, mentor, or responsible staff in charge, preferably a single person of position such as the head of collection management.
