Description

The collection of paleovertebrates (IMEDEA-PALEOVERT) was driven by Dr. Josep Antoni Alcover. Most of the fossil specimens that are preserved in the IMEDEA come from deposits in the Balearic Islands. All records are fossil vertebrates mainly from the Pliocene and Quaternary Balearics. The IMEDEA-PALEOVERT collection, which is currently growing, has a great scientific interest in the number and diversity of species represented in the vertebrate faunas living in the Balearic Islands before to the arrival of humans.

Strengths

The IMEDEA-PALEOVERT collection includes a rich representation of fossil vertebrates from the Balearic Islands. Much of the research on the fossil vertebrate fauna of the Balearic Islands has been carried out and continues to be carried out on materials preserved in this collection. In addition, it preserves specimens of species and subspecies of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals from the Balearic Islands and Macaronesian islands.
