Description
The mission of the CRF is to contribute to preserve and sustainably use of plant genetic diversity. Thus, the CRF conserves and uses landraces, crop wild relatives, obsolete commercial varieties and other species that are no-longer-used but which have genetic potential value for food and agriculture, making available the heritage of Spanish agrobiodiversity, which is key for Agofood Innovation as well as for the fulfillment of the environmental objectives of sustainable development. One of the CRF’s activities to achieve this objective is the conservation of the base collections, as a security duplicate, of all the seed collections, maintained by the Spanish Genebanks Network. At July 2022 that collection was composed by 45000 accessions mainly vegetables, identified by passport data established following the FAO/Biodiversity Multicrop Passport Descriptors including: identification code in holding institution, taxonomic information and common and local name, data of the collection site, biological status, acquisition sources and storage condition. Following a general classification of the PGFAA, quantitatively, the most important group are those of vegetables, grain legumes, winter cereals, spring cereal and forages; regarding the biological status are, mainly, landraces, wild species and commercial varieties. More information about this collection and a template to request this material are available at www.bancocrf.inia.es.
Overall information
Goals
Maintain the base collection in optimal conservation conditions to ensure its long-term preservation.
Strengths
We have a duplicate security copy of seed collections conserved by the germplasm banks of the PNRF institutions. These accessions are available for use in the active collections held in the institutions belongs to the PNRF network. In 2022, a part of these collections has been sent to the Svalbard Vault, as an accessory security method. We have available the most important Spanish seed collections of winter cereals, grain legumes and industrial crops, keeping in conditions that allow their long-term maintenance. The collections are documented with passport data information and, in some cases, are characterized agro/morphologically, with biochemical and molecular markers. Our research lines are focus germplasm conservation and with the evaluation of conserved materials. We have adequate facilities for the purpose to be fulfilled, including laboratories, conservation chambers and experimental farm. The team responsible for the collections has extensive experience in the field and is highly motivated to carry out this work.
