Overall information
Goals
Floristic, taxonomical, chorological and cartographical studies of Lichens, especially genus Cladonia, Bryophytes and Vascular Plants mostly from the Mediterranean region.
Strengths
The general collection It includes all the sheets of the herbarium, which are registered correlatively without distinction of taxonomic groups. There are currently about 130,000, most of which correspond to plants of the Spanish flora, with a good representation of the European and American flora. There are specimens from more than 70 countries highlighting Portugal, France, Finland, Cyprus, United States, Argentina, Chile and Morocco. As is common, most of the sheets are of plants with seeds, more than 90,000 computerized samples. In addition, the Herbarium has excellent collections of cryptogams, some 28,000 sheets, of which there are about 10,000 bryophytes, 15,000 lichens and 2,500 ferns. The collections of fungi and algae are less numerous, but overall the number of cryptogams places the MACB as one of the herbaria with the highest participation of cryptogams in the country. The collection grows thanks to the research work of scientists from the Complutense University itself. The material that is deposited comes mainly from research projects, doctoral theses and other teaching works. The entry of new material from donations and the exchange of copies with other herbaria is also important. The average entry is 2,000 copies per year. The Herbarium regularly participates in the annual harvesting excursion and in the exiccata of the Ibero-Macaronesian Herbarium Association. The collection of types The Herbarium has 92 types, which are kept separately from the other collections, since the sheets designated as types contain the original reference specimens designated by the authors and which were used to describe the taxon for the first time or, in the case of missing , which have been later designated by other botanists; the type specimens represent an enormous scientific value for Botany as a science and natural heritage. The MACB herbarium type collection currently consists of 18 holotypes, 50 isotypes, 1 lectotype, 7 isolectotypes, 1 isoneotype, 5 symptoms, and 10 paratypes. From the taxonomic point of view the types correspond one to algae, 13 to lichens, 6 to mosses, 3 to ferns and 69 to angiosperms; Regarding the taxonomic range, 60 correspond to species, 12 to hybrids, 6 to subspecies, 11 to varieties and 3 to forms. Detailed information on the characteristics of most types has been published by various authors.
