Description
The IEO-CSIC national center, dependent on the Ministry of Science and Innovation, was created by Royal Decree on April 17, 1914, and has been dedicated to research in marine sciences, especially in relation to scientific knowledge of the oceans , the sustainability of fishery resources and the marine environment. In addition to his dedication to basic and applied research, he also provides scientific and technological advice to administrations on matters related to oceanography and marine sciences. The IEO-CSIC has its headquarters in Madrid and nine coastal oceanographic centers, many of which have important zoological collections, made available to the international scientific community. The Oceanographic Center of the Canary Islands, located in S/C de Tenerife, currently has two functional Collections: the Marine Fauna Collection and the Biological Samples Collection. Thus housing a multitude of specimens from different marine zoological groups (fish, crustaceans, molluscs, cephalopods…) from the West African coast and the Antarctic continent, as well as a large collection of biological material such as: \”Collection of otoliths and scales\” ; “Collection of jaws”, “Collection of cephalopod statoliths”, “Collection of chondrichthyan skin and jaws” and a photographic collection with more than 15,000 images.

Goals
The Spanish Institute of Oceanography is dedicated to research in marine sciences, especially in relation to scientific knowledge of the oceans, the sustainability of fishing resources and the marine environment. The IEO, in addition to carrying out basic and applied research, also provides scientific and technological advice to administrations on matters related to oceanography and marine sciences. All this, with the aim of increasing scientific knowledge of the oceans and making sustainable use of them.
