LiquenCity·2
The LiquenCity·2 project (https://liquencity2.org/), co-funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), is the extension to the citizen science project LiquenCity, in which in 2018 joined more than 2,000 people from Madrid and Barcelona.
This new project is aimed to use lichens as air quality indicators, engaging the educational community. The project is intended to get citizen participation from educational centres, with the collaboration of experts on lichens, to know the distribution of indicator species from each city. In this edition, the project will be implemented in Oviedo, Pamplona and Pontevedra.
By 2020, citizen participation will allow getting enough information to develop air pollution maps for Oviedo, Pamplona and Pontevedra based on the distribution of indicator lichens living in urban trees.
Using data collected through this citizen science initiative, it will be possible to improve the use and management plans of these three cities. Moreover, the obtained information will be stored and shared through GBIF (gbif.es), the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, in order to serve in future research works.
